EYES WITHOUT A FACE
(LES YEUX SANS VISAGE) 1959
By George Franju
1959, 90 min.
French with English subtitles
Secluded in the French countryside an obsessed doctor attempts a radical plastic surgery in an attempt to restore the disfigured face of his beloved daughter...but at a horrifying price!
This lyrical and terrifying French cult classic has had a huge influence on many (David Lynch, John Woo, etc.- and even Billy Idol made a hit song about it!). \'Les Yeux sans Visage\' has stunned audiences around the world with its shocking yet poetic images which
will always haunt the mind. It scandalized audiences so much when it was released that the French film critics tried to deny the film existed!
The film culminates in an astonishingly brutal and beautiful finale, all set to weird carnival music by Maurice Jarre. A strange balance of fantasy and realism, clinical detachment and drama, beauty and pain. Its a real masterpiece that is rarely ever screened.
This is extreme poetry, and perhaps the most subversive film ever made.
+ LA SANG DES BETES- A 30 minute surrealist-realist documentary by George Franju.
Also one of David Lynch\'s favorite films, and one which he talks about at length in his new documentary about the making of INLAND EMPIRE.
