Film Club presents:
A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE (1974)
Directed by John Cassavetes
146 minutes
Spellbinding, raw, unbelievably intense. This film makes all other films seem like playgrounds for kindergarten fantasies. This is where American cinema had the chance to finally grow up. It is a film which, in its own way, has never been matched.
Gene Rowlands plays Mabel, a woman trapped into a family situation that she cant handle, which leads to a her mental breakdown. Peter Falk (better known as Columbo!) gives the best performance of his career as the husband who doesn\'t understand why is wife is falling apart. Cassavetes unflinchingly zooms in on the slow decay. Rowland\'s performance is a key reason the film has been declared a \"national treasure\" by the Library of Congress.
Simply put: This is cinema beyond cinema, it is acting beyond acting.
What one viewer wrote:
\"A man goes into a big, strange house with his family and friends. He is armed with script and camera, and proceeds to create a milestone work of American cinema – the key film of the 1970s. Above all else, `A Woman Under the Influence\' is Anti-Hollywood, Anti-Establishment, Anti-Film. 1970\'s Hollywood may have defined itself with films like Godfather, Rocky, Annie Hall, and Deer Hunter – but real, unpredictable, chaotic life was Cassavetes\' territory.
Fact is, Hollywood will never be ready for uninhibited Mabel and her much crazier husband Nick. Nutty as she is, Mabel/Cassavetes does nothing but tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but. Hollywood at best, tells persuasive lies. Get my point? By the way, Gena Rowlands in \"Influence\" gives one of the finest performances of the sound era. See this film. See it now. Right now.\"
