TROUBLE EVERY DAY (2001)
Directed by Claire Denis
101 minutes
In French with English subtitles
Trouble Every Day is a haunting vision of desire gone haywire. Light on story and big on aesthetics, the film moves silently like a sensual and terrible dream. This film is lovely to look at and the camera work is captivating. It is harsh, poetic and haunting...but warning- it is also not for the weak of heart. Vincent Gallo plays an American who is visiting Paris with his new wife...a man with an extremely dark secret....and it certainly is one of Gallo\'s most unusual roles.
Trouble Every Day is a vastly underated French horror film from the great director Claire Denis (Beau Travail) and it stars one of her favorite actors- Vincent Gallo along with the fabulous Beatice Dalle (Betty Blue). Although it was attacked critically when it was first released, over the last years it has gained a cult following and has been the subject of much critical debate and analysis. It was one of the first films that started the \"The New European Extreme\" cinema movement, which is largely concerned with transgressive or violent sexuality.
What a perfectly unique film this is....from the elliptical narrative that never lets on more than it needs to, to the stripped and reserved performances, to the suggestive camera work and the beautiful, atmospheric photography. The sense of menace created by its mysterious narrative and its blasts of transgression suggest a link between art-film and horror film that can only be compared, perhaps, to the work of David Cronenberg. With a dark and haunting music score by the British band TINDERSTICKS.
