Ciné INTERZONE / FILMHUIS CAVIA presents:
CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING
(Celine et Julie vont en bateau) 1974
Directed by Jacques Rivette
192 minutes
In French with English subtitles
Rivette\'s rarely seen yet biggest commercial and critical hit, is an exhilarating combination of the themes of theatricality, paranoia, amnesia and la vie parisienne, all wrapped up in an entrancing examination of the nature of filmmaking (and film-watching). Celine is a magician, and Julie is a Librarian, who meet in Montmartre and wind up sharing the same flat, bed, finance, clothes, identity and imagination. Soon, thanks to a magic candy, they find themselves spectators, then participants, in a surreal \'film-within-the-film\'.
The film can be seen as a modern \"Alice in Wonderland\" with all the labyrinthine narratives intact. I have never seen a film which inserts dreams and desire into its own reality so effortlessly and significantly as this one. Acknowledged by director Susan Seidelman as a huge influence on her own hit film Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) - its freewheeling, playful spirit is still incredibly refreshing today.
One viewers accurate comment:
\"Celine and Julie go boating is a password to a twilight realm where roads travel the fringe between the exterior world and intimate dreams, between past and present, between reality and fiction. It was summer in Paris. They believed in utopias, feared nothing, and were ready for any adventure. Ghosts and smiles followed the silent music...Jacques Rivette seemed to conduct the mystery without moving, and the world was spinning around- magic.\"
