SUICIDE CLUB (Jisatsu Saakuru) 2002
Directed by Sion Sono
94 minutes
In Japanese with English subtitles
In Tokyo, when fifty-four high-school girls commit a collective suicide, jumping from a platform in the Shinjuku subway station, the police force which is being lead by Detective Kuroda has no clue as to why. Then he receives an e-mail from a young woman, The Bat, advising that there is a web site where red dots mean the number of persons that died.
As the rash of mass suicides continue to plague Tokyo the detectives are confronted with the reality that these are not your average end-my-suffering suicides. Are the suicides really suicide? Are they in fact murders? And how do a bizarre website and a preteen all-girl band called DESERT fit in?
And also it should be noted that this film does not follow the rules of a Hollywood narrative, but rather is disjoint, mysterious and feels like a jigsaw puzzle which makes you put the pieces together yourself.
