LOVES OF A BLONDE (Lásky jedné plavovlásky) 1965
Directed by Milos Forman
85 minutes
In Czech with English subtitles
Milos Forman\'s \"Loves of a Blonde\" which he made in Czechoslovakia in 1965 way before \"Cuckoo Nest\" and \"Amadeus\" tells a very simple bitter-sweet tale about a teenaged girl who works in a shoe factory in a small town. With sixteen girls to one man - her chances to find a man of her dreams were not very high. One evening, she meets an attractive and young piano player who tells her about Prague and compares her to a guitar that could\'ve been painted by Picasso.
This film is bittersweet, and it was a tremendous sensation when it first hit the screen, winning Milos Forman his first academy award nomination. When seen today the film seems incredibly fresh, and feels like a welcome wind blowing in from another world...a world of the past which at least is kept alive through cinema!

DAISIES (Sedmikrasky) 1966
Directed by Vera Chytilova
74 minutes
In Czech with English subtitles
One of the most vibrant and fun art house films you are ever likely to see. Vera Chytilova was merging feminism, nihilism, psychedelic color filters, collage aesthetics, and silent film slapstick into a one of a kind film about two young girls named Marie who decide to self destruct, and be just as wicked as the world. Its psychedelic DADA from start to finish.
Perhaps the most revolutionary and subversive of all the Czech New Wave films, today it is simply never screened but has become a cult classic anyway, and remains almost totally unseen outside the Czech Republic.
One person\'s comment:
\"Clocking in at 74 minutes, the movie isn\'t really very long, but it is sublime: its over a pair of sexy, giggling young buffoons named Marie and Marie who prostitute themselves to hideous middle-aged men for free meals and booze. They\'re childish, they\'re drunken, they\'re funny as hell, and they see right through the revolting hypocrisy of the totalitarian socialist state in which they\'re sadly marooned. It laid bare the hypocrisy of Czechoslovakian political life so thoroughly that it virtually destroyed Chytilova\'s career. The astounding psychedelic camera work by Jaroslav Kucera, incidentally, is simply icing on the cake.\"
