L\'ECLISSE (The Eclipse) 1962
Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni
125 minutes
In Italian with English subtitles
This elusive, enigmatic, haunting film was the concluding film in Antonioni\'s famous trilogy over the modern world which included LA NOTTE and L\'AVENTURA. The plot is simple enough....its the story of Vittoria (played by the luscious Monica Vitti) who, as her engagement falls apart, drifts into a relationship with a broker in the stock exchange (played by Alain Delon). This highly visual film uses the changing architecture of Rome as a backdrop of this doomed affair. In a breathtaking modernist style the film charts the themes of alienation and the difficulty of finding deeper connections as the world becomes more mechanized and business-oriented.
Few films that I know of have left people as utterly speechless as this one. Even the people that I know who love this film cannot even explain the film. It seems that its one of those rare films that you just have to experience and forget about trying to describe it...its just beyond words. Torwards the end this film veers off and gives us one of the most unique, bizarre and stunning endings in all of film history.
Some comments by others:
\"Michelangelo Antonioni\'s L\'Eclisse rolls over you and wraps you in its stylish embrace. Every frame is like an exquisite black and white photograph, yet there\'s nothing static about this movie. It\'s fluid, sleek, and graceful, achieving its own kind of visual music. L\'Eclisse contrasts opposing elements: Light and shadow, noise and silence, laughter and death, love and money, desire and dissatisfaction. This is a movie essential to anyone\'s understanding of what movies can be.\"
\"Smart and moody, this film is not only about emotional Eclipse, it is about the eclipse of the old society as it changes, and also about how architectural changes eclipse older styles, and more importantly, nature. The film has a look of a sci-fi horror movie, but the horror here is emotional desolation and the destruction of nature/natural-ness. This is not light movie entertainment, but it is film making at it\'s non-verbal, eloquent best. Captivating.\"
