\"4\" (Chetyre) 2005
Directed by Ilya Khrzhanovsky
126 minutes
In Russian with English subtitles
4 was banned or censored in Russia because of its controversial and power-undermining nature towards Russia\'s political decision makers. The movie is based on a script by Vladimir Sorokin, who is known to be a radical post-modern writer who has challenged numerous taboos in Russian culture. He is a great scenarist, and Khrzhanovsky directs his grotesqueries with disjointed flare. Incidental noises are painfully amplified, camera movement is shaky, and colors are all wrong, creating a wonderfully alien atmosphere.
4 follows the lives of 3 different people in Moscow....a piano tuner, a meat packer and a prostitute. Because of their absurdity, these episodes are as much realistic as they are unimaginable. The opening of the film sets the whole atmosphere, introducing three characters who happen to meet in an anonymous bar. In the long bar scene, the viewer gets the chance to learn the intriguing and controversial details of their lives. The bars scene is Khrzhanovsk\'s introduction to the question: \"what is to be believed and what is not?\". Throughout the movie the viewer gets the chance to puzzle the pieces and to make their own judgment.
OK, so the film centers on these 3 characters right from the beginning....what does the number 4 have to do with it? According to the director the fourth character is the element of destiny.
This film baffles description. Hypnotic and phantasmal, both profound and profane, and bordering on the surreal.... in 4 we catch a glimpse of Russia as if it were another planet, beyond all of the delusional speeches of the people in political power.
Both beautiful and horrifying in a Baudelaire sort of way, one reviewer described it as \"Tarkovsky on crack\"....and there is some truth in it!
