THE TELEPHONE BOOK (1971)
Directed by Nelson Lyon
80 minutes
In English
You ever see a film that makes you think, \"They don\'t make \'em like this anymore\"? Of course you have. We all have. That\'s commonplace. Much rarer than that sensation, though, is a film that makes you believe that not only do they not make \'em like this anymore, but they may have never made \'em like this to begin with. That\'s the world in which The Telephone Book inhabits. It\'s a product of the \'70s New York City underground-cinema movement, but watching it is like stumbling across a transmission from another planet. One critic called it \"mind-roasting\", and I\'d say that\'s a fair assessment.
The plot? Well let\'s keep it minimal, because the film is more about how its made rather than \"what its about\". But to keep it short its the story of a girl who falls in love with the world\'s greatest obscene phone call. Its kind of strange but the American comedian Steve Martin said that this was his favorite movie of all time. Bizarre. The cast includes Warhol superstars Ultra Violet, Ondine and Geri Miller. Warhol himself was in the film, but his part didn\'t make it and ended up in the waste bin.
So this coming week at the OT 301 we will bring this notorious 70s cult film extraordinaire for the first time to an Amsterdam cinema!

SUPERSTAR IN A HOUSEDRESS (2004)
Directed by Craig Highberger
95 minutes
in English
\"Jackie Curtis is not a drag queen. Jackie is an artist. A pioneer without a frontier.\" -- Andy Warhol.
Superstar in a Housedress examines the life and legend of Warhol transvestite superstar Jackie Curtis who was a poet, playwright, performer, and one of the great dazzling personalities of his time. Jackie both lived and performed sometimes as a man, sometimes as a woman - and died tragically of a drug overdose under bizarre circumstances when he was only 38.
This is a documentary over her life, and is full of wacky interviews with people in the factory scene. If you remember the Max\'s Kansas City/Andy Warhol era, this will bring something back for you. If you don\'t, you might get a breath of a so-different, now-gone downtown artistic atmosphere of the East Village in the 60s and 70s. The movie does an excellent job of introducing the gender-shifting performer Jackie Curtis and the kind of outrageous whacked-out, druggy, boundary-trashing theatre/movie scene that s/he was part of at that time.
And of course this is how Lou Reed spoke about her in WALK ON THE WILD SIDE:
\"Jackie is just speeding away
Thought she was James Dean for a day
Then I guess she had to crash
Valium would have helped that dash
She said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side
And the colored girls say
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo...\"
