NABOER (Next Door) 2005
Directed by Pal Sletaune
75 minutes
In Norwegian with English subtitles
One of the best Norwegian films of the last years was this erotic thriller, which director Paul Schrader (Cat People, Mischima) loved so much that he wanted to re-make it in Hollywood....but the original director wouldn't allow it. This is fine with me, because I feel that the film is already so deft, subtle and fascinating that I doubt it actually could be improved upon.
When John's girlfriend walks out on him, he soon begins to form a neighborly friendship with two wild women who live in the cluttered apartment next door. That friendship soon takes an ominous turn, however, when one of the women seduces John in a very bizarre way. As John begins to fall into the dream world of the apartment next door, he gradually finds himself questioning the strange reality that seems to have swallowed him body and soul.
This is a film with an extremely strange pace to it and some wild and very interesting twists and turns, that keeps the audience at the edge of their seats. The main actor is excellent and his performance carries you through a maze of events with rare intensity. I also really loved the performances of the two girls, but in the end it is the stylish direction and mesmerising cinematography which sets this Norwegian thriller apart from other films of a similar genre. Many have compared the style of this film to David Lynch, and I would agree that this film does have something with the darker and crazier moments of, lets say, Blue Velvet.

THE BLACK CAT (1934)
Directed by Edgar G. Ulmer
65 minutes
In English
This film is a cult classic and is based vaguely on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe. Starring the two greats of Hollywood horror cinema, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff....and both are at their best in this film.
Two American honeymooners in Hungary are trapped in the home of a Satan-worshiping priest when the bride is taken there for medical help following a road accident. This film has a wonderfully downright creepy atmosphere woven from the themes of jealousy, lust, revenge, murder, sadism, necrophilia, pedophilia, and incest. You have to admit that's a hell of a lot for a 65 minute film! One of the best....I can barely wait to see it again myself.
