CONSPIRATORS OF PLEASURE
(Spiklenci Slasti) 1996
Directed by Jan Svankmajer
83 minutes
In Czech with English subtitles
Hopefully everyone who receives this announcement already knows about the wonderful experimental Czech filmmaker Jan Svankmajer. Svankmajer is someone who started off with making some of the most bizarre and mind-boggling short films that you will ever have a chance to see, using clay animation. He is the surreal poet of the animation world. Later in his life, he started making feature films (Alice, Faust), in which he incorporated his wild imaginary animation into full length films. Tonight\'s film is coming from this later period of his work.
This film is Svankmajer\'s headlong plunge into erotic desire. He has described Conspirators of Pleasure as being the first entirely pornographic film that doesn\'t contain a single conventionally pornographic image. This, needless to say, is part of Svankmajer\'s theme - our notions of pleasure, particularly sexual pleasure, are frequently derived from images and objects that trigger off pleasurable sensations or memories. As a result, ordinary everyday items such as bread balls, fur stoles, rolling pins and glue become, through Svankmajer\'s eyes, as illicit and intriguing as any more outwardly pornographic material. It will be difficult to find a film that is quite so obsessively fetishistic as this one - almost everything that passes in front of his camera is given a weirdly erotic charge.
