In this documentary actress Tilda Swinton collaborates with director Isaac Julien (Young Soul Rebels) on this richly textured tribute to the late British filmmaker Derek Jarman. In 2002, Swinton penned the text entitled "Letter to an Angel" in memory of her deceased friend and collaborator. In this film, that elegiac piece of writing is carefully woven with a previously unseen interview with Jarman to create a highly original biography that doesn't rely on talking-head interviews but instead a dreamlike flow of images and observations. It should be noted that Swinton started out her acting career performing in the daring films of Jarman.
The film shifts between the interview with Jarman over his bold life and thoughts, which are montaged with Super-8 home films and clips from his feature films, along with a burning narration spoken and written by Swinton, who obviously loved Jarman . The result is not only a film about Derek Jarman, but a film which has also been stylistically influenced by Jarman's work. As Swinton states in the film, Jarman's life was a demonstration of less chat, more action ... less dependence more love".

Derek Jarman made several different kinds of films, both straight narrative (Caravaggio) and more poetic/expressionistic films. Of his more expressionistic films, this is the one that he will probably be remembered for. Shooting freely in video, super 8, 16mm, and 35mm, he creates a montage of his own fantastical and mythological universe. You have to put this film in the same general category as Tarkovsky's more poetic works, the films of Sokorov and also the more recent Tarnation.
In this uncompromising film, which is a poetic tour-de-force, there is no dialogue, just a haunting narration, music, sound, and fiery images. If there is a single theme running through it, it's an apocalyptic vision of the future of England, told from a very subjective and artistic viewpoint. Its a war-torn England depicted in this film, an England which is tearing itself apart. For me its actually a hallucinatory vision of what our modern life will look like if everything suddenly collapses, perhaps starting with our economy.....
This is a non-narrative film, which makes it closer to a painting than a novel. Its not an easy film, but it is incredibly powerful, evocative and visually stunning, and images from it will burn long afterwards in your memory. Starring Tilda Swinton.
