HERE IS ALWAYS SOMEWHERE ELSE is an acclaimed documentary film by Rene Daalden which pieces together the brief life of the enigmatic Dutch artist (and ex-Rietveld student) Bas Jan Ader who was last seen in 1975 when he took off in what would have been the smallest sailboat ever to cross the Atlantic. In his final performance In Search of the Miraculous Ader attempted to cross from Massachusetts to Ireland, but only his empty vessel reached the Irish coast eight months later. For an artist whose films, photos, and performances were often framed around profound failureimages of the artist falling, colliding, cryingthis final gesture seemed prophetic, but continues to be a mystery for even those closest to him.
As with any cinema open to the contradictions of life, this film splinters off into many sub-texts, one of which is the difference between European art (which is connected to the weight of history) and American art (which is clean, positive and a-historical). And of course since the time of Alder's death the differences between these two art worlds has become minimal, with the heavy and steady influence of Americanism totally overtaking European culture.
