Abel Ferrara's first big splash in independent filmmaking, this film stars the cult actress/model/writer Zo Lund as a young, beautiful New York City woman who is intensely shy and unable to speak. Her naive beauty provokes the aggressive attention of many of the men who meet her. One day while walking home, she is assaulted at gunpoint and brutally attacked by two thugs. Her enormous fears, which had driven her inward before, now push her to an outward course of action. After killing one of her assailants, she discovers a .45 automatic, which she she starts carrying with her on the streets...initially for protection, but ultimately for unrelenting revenge against all males.
Zo Lund makes the most of her wordless role, her wide-eyed vulnerability hardening to a dead-eyed determination as she transforms from quivering victim to avenging dark angel, a one-woman vigilante force hunting pimps, perverts, and sickos, and using herself as bait. Many of the images are striking and unforgettable, such as the main character dressed for Halloween in a nun's outfit with voluptuous red lipstick on her lips and with a gun tucked in her garter belt....creating a mood of heaven and hell as she prepares to clean the streets of any man she happens to come across. Despite what this storyline sounds like, this is a subtle, beautiful, convulsive film about death and transfiguration.
This film is extremely difficult to get in its uncensored version, and is never screened in cinemas anyway, so this is a special showing of this legendary cult film....in the uncut version of course! After this magnificent collaboration between Abel Ferrara and Zo Lund they next worked together on the notorious Bad Lieutenant.
The life of the amazing Zo Lund is an example of marginalized creativity and thoughtful courage And, in the end, whose life is an example of multiple "becomings" if not hers? Before the screening I will give a short biographical intro over her life and work.

With all of the interest surrounding Gaspar Noe's IRREVERSIBLE, I thought it was time to unearth this dirty gem from New York's transgressive hay days. For what is Noe's picture but a French version of this dark classic? Another cutting-edge film staring LUNG LEG and LYDIA LUNCH.....a film which fits all too well into the theme of "becoming intense".
