Another one of Agnes Varda's wonderful later films, and here she documents the lives of the scavengers in France who live on the stuff that other people (like you and me) throw out or leave behind. The film begins with a study of Jean-Francois Millet's painting of women who gather the left-overs in the fields once the harvest has been picked. From that point of departure the film takes off into a wonderful search for the "gleaners" of today...those who live off what we leave behind. Her research leads her from the remote countrysides of France to the outdoor markets in Paris.
Compassionate and brilliantly composed, this is a brief, funny, poetic and epigrammatic film that any real lover of cinema should check out. She herself calls it a "wandering road documentary." The film investigates not only on how people use waste in order to survive, but also on how people use waste in order to create artistically.
Agnes Varda is the neglected founder of the French New Wave, and her cinema has been largely ignored outside of France...so hopefully she is finally attaining some measure of the respect she deserves!

Yet another one of those films that when it was released everybody was against it, the critics and audiences hated it, and now its considered a masterpiece. Mmmmmmm. Well, you probably have seen this film, but if not, then its one of the most daring and charming pictures in the history of cinema. The story centers around a freak show circus where the beautiful "normal" people are actually ugly, and the "ugly" freaks are actually beautiful.
