Did anyone think I was going to abandon those who are staying in Amsterdam for the holidays? Never! The program goes on at all of the cinemas, and therefore next Tuesday we will screen this extremely rare gem...and once again its a film you will likely never have a chance to see again in any form.

Pastoral: To Die in the Country is another great piece of surreal film-making from Shuji Terayama (Throw away your Books, Rally in the Streets). Terayama was Japan's infant-terrible of the turbulent sixties. Genius, avant-gardist, iconoclast, photographer, director, playwright, novelist, filmmaker, cultural critic and poet. In his time, his work incited scandal and outrage. Today, he is a cult hero. He is one of the favorite directors of the music group STEREOLAB and they called their 1996 album after his short film Emperor Tomato Ketchup.
This film is about a young character called Terayama, who is forced to deal with his sexual hang-ups due to the onset of puberty. His life is shifting, and he is also slowly drifting away from his clinging mother. The village which he lives in is the most surreal vision in the film....the strange denizens who populate his world. One such example is the circus troupe which is wild and fantastic and is shown through a spectral prism which makes the visuals explode in a way that it seems only Terayama can achieve. Close to the middle of the film, Terayama has an actor playing himself interrupt the film saying that the rest hasn't been edited yet, he soon enters the film he is shooting and interacts with his former self.
For a film that was nominated for a Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival, its a crime that is film has been impossible to see for ages, and therefore has been forgotten about and effectively deleted from history. in this film Shuji Terayama has provided some of the most beautiful visuals that have ever graced cinema.
