Jason Soares Aguiar is a Dutch-Portuguese film director and writer based in Utrecht. He grew up in the small town of Hellevoetsluis carrying two cultures inside him — and that quiet tension runs through everything he makes.
Trained at the Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam, the Nederlandse Filmacademie, and currently studying Film at the HKU, Jason makes work that is raw, grainy, and drawn to rare stories. His short film EMDR won the November selection at Rotterdams Open Doek Festival and reached the 2024 final. His follow-up, Dimittere, screened at Open Doek and GO Goes Short.
His commercial work includes artists like Duncan Laurence and The Benzos, and brands like From Strangers to Lovers. His studio, Guiar, takes its name from the Portuguese word meaning to guide — because to him, directing has always been about leading a story forward together. His filmmaking is quietly shaped by Fado, and an instinct for the stories most people walk past.
