Beeld & Geluid has launched De Schatkamer, a streaming platform making approximately 700,000 radio and television programs from the Dutch archive publicly accessible, a development that took four years. A new European copyright directive made this possible by giving more weight to heritage interests than to commercial interests for material that is at least 25 years old, while rights holders can withdraw their consent via an opt-out mechanism. Furthermore, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science funded the purchase of rights for younger titles, meaning that about fifty percent of the total archive is now online. The backend builds upon existing software, which Beeld & Geluid expanded with a user-friendly interface and improved metadata access.
