Axelle Nurhaliza Maillet graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy with two film poems, including Paper Boat, a documentary portrait of Atun, the Indonesian nanny who took on a motherly role after the departure of Maillet's biological mother. The film combines dreamy coastal imagery with archival photographs and a voice-over based on poetry by Sapardi Djoko Damono, in which the metaphor of the paper boat represents Atun's life as a traveling nanny. Paper Boat simultaneously depicts social inequality in Bali, where exhausted locals serve tourists while foreign investors displace communities—a theme Maillet intends to explore in full depth in her next film.
