The Toronto International Film Festival (September 10–20) has announced the twelve titles competing for the Platform Award, with the winner eligible for the International Feature Film Oscar for the first time this year following a change in the eligibility criteria. Pablo Trapero chairs the jury, while the winning filmmaker receives 20,000 CAD. Most talked about is Amanda Kernell’s Brace Your Heart, her follow-up to Sámi Blood and Charter, followed by John Trengoves The Smell of Apples, based on Mark Behr’s novel about a boy who discovers the horrors of apartheid.
