With *Overgaan*, Noor Kolsters (HKU) made a partly autobiographical directorial debut about eight-year-old Mirre, who seeks her own path in grief after the death of her best friend. The film strictly follows Mirre's perspective, with warm close-ups by DoP Niels Lokhorst and a natural performance by debutant Janne van Hoogmoed. Kolsters based the script on the loss of her childhood friend Ruben and conducted anthropological research on school playgrounds. Sources of inspiration included *Petite maman*, *Close*, and *Un monde*. Her social goal: to demonstrate that children experience grief in a raw and uninhibited way, outside of any prescriptive grief script.
