Livia May graduated from the HKU with the short animation Dad Said. The film depicts the strained relationship between a father and daughter, with emotional abuse at its center. May deliberately drew the characters simply so that viewers could easily identify with them. She worked on a small format, allowing the texture of chalk and paint to dominate on screen. She found inspiration in Japanese children's book illustrators such as Gomi Tarō and in the Heta-uma movement. Feature films such as Lady Bird, Aftersun, and Scrapper influenced her camerawork. Dad Said will be screened at the Netherlands Film Festival from September 25 to October 2, 2026.
