Amira Duynhouwer, a graduate of the Netherlands Film Academy and known for series such as Nemesis and Mocro Maffia, makes her feature film debut with Sugar. The film follows Chyna, a Surinamese woman in the Bijlmer who is trapped in a violent relationship. Duynhouwer wrote the script after personal contact with domestic violence within her circle of acquaintances. Her central question: how does a normal person end up in such a relationship? The script evoked a lack of understanding among male readers regarding the main character, which confronted Duynhouwer with a fundamental difference in reader experience. The production worked closely with the Surinamese community to ensure cultural authenticity.
