With *Coward*, Lukas Dhont has made an atypical First World War film. He avoids the battlefield and focuses on the backstage of the war. Historical photographs of men in robes behind the front lines inspired him. The film shows how the war offered Pierre and Francis space for a relationship that was unthinkable outside that framework.
