This autumn, Filmtheater De Uitkijk will be screening the award-winning Iranian film About Elly. In this film, director Ashgar Farhadi takes us on a trip to the Caspian Sea, where a group of college friends is enjoying a well-deserved short vacation. However, Sepideh, who arranges everything down to the last detail, also has a hidden agenda: her goal is to set up Elly, her daughter's beautiful kindergarten teacher, with Ahmad, who has just returned from Germany after a divorce. As the chemistry between Elly and Ahmad grows, they become increasingly entangled in a web of lies designed to conceal the true nature of the weekend getaway. Until Elly suddenly disappears.

Asghar Farhadis' About Elly won a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival last year and was Iran's official entry for the Oscars. With this film, Filmtheater De Uitkijk has chosen a unique insight into the lives of the upper middle classes of modern Iranian society and its far-reaching culture of politeness (tarof), which easily leads to deceit—even among friends. About Elly is a skillfully directed drama that surprisingly unfolds into a gripping thriller, in which lies and truth are inextricably linked.

On Friday, October 1, Parwin Mirrahimy, Director of the Iranian Film Festival, will deliver a special introduction to About Elly. Mirrahimy founded the Iranian Film Festival in 2006 to introduce the Dutch public to the rich Iranian cinema in an innovative way. Since then, the Iranian Film Festival has grown into a major success, the first in Europe to do so, where film, music, art, and debate are blended with contemporary Iranian culture.
