LES CHANSONS D'AMOUR (2007)
Directed by Christophe Honoré
92 minutes
In French with English subtitles
Christophe Honoré is one of the most exciting filmmakers of this time, and this exuberant and tender film, Les Chansons D\'Amour, is a modern-day polysexual musical told through songs sung entirely by the cast (in a modernized variation of Jacque Demy\'s THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBERG).
In this film director Honore succeeds in restoring romanticism back into life (and the cinema)...what more could you ask for? Mostly I am not crazy about musicals, but this one goes into areas that most musicals never go...its really brilliant piece of film making!
What's the story? Simply put, its something like this...in the hope of sparking their stalled relationship, Ismaël and Julie enter a playful yet emotionally laced threesome with Alice. When tragedy strikes, these young Parisians are forced to deal with the fragility of life and love each in their own ways.
Sexually honest in a way that no American film has been for years. A wonderful film.

LES CHOSES DE LA VIE (1969)
Directed by Claude Saulet
80 minutes
In French with English subtitles
Unlike any of the other works by this director, \"Les choses de la vie\" has a terse emotional impact and at the same time a wonderfully inventive film style. The editing alone is extremely creative and stunning - never has a car accident been filmed with such mastery. Flashbacks are used with great skill too and the whole structure of the film is at once so complicated and so gracefully easy that anything from Hollywood these days pales in comparison. It also sports a great cast, including Romy Schneider (The important thing is to love) and Michel Piccoli (La Grande Bouffe) in the film that shot off their international careers.
The last part of the film is almost completely silent, but the great cast work wonders and pulls it off easily. It also has a classic 60's music score which is wonderfully sentimental. It won the prestigious Louis Delluc prize back in 1969. And once again, its rarely screened these days.
Wanna hear Romy Schneider and Michel Piccoli sing the theme song of the film?
