MONDAY JANUARY 12
SAMARITAN GIRL (SAMARIA) 2004
Directed by Kim Ki-Duk
95 minutes
In Korean with English subtitles
After 3-IRON, which was screened at the Anita a month ago, this is probably my favorite film by this outstanding Korean director, whose films can be harsh but at the same time have a sort of philosophical poetry in them. This is a film about sin, shame, guilt and the possibility of redemption.
To fulfill their dreams of traveling to Europe, two teenage girls Yeo-jin and Jae-young start a prostitution business. Yeo-jin acts as the pimp and handles the business side, while Jae-young \"entertains\" the customers. When Yeo-jin gets distracted from from her duties, Jae-young is surrounded and is accidentally killed during a police raid. In an act of penance Yeo-jin locates their past clients and starts sleeping with them and returning their money....in order to reverse what has been done in the past.
I am certainly not going to say anything more about the story, but the film takes some very serious twists and turns from this point on.
Kim Ki-Duk won the best director award at the Berlin Film Festival for this film.
