The Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival has a new name:

From April 15 to 26, the festival will celebrate its 25th edition. A jubilee, then, although that is not the reason to relabel the AFFF.

But why a new name, then?

Because the term 'fantastic' is too often confused with the more limited concept of 'fantasy'.
Because we believe that IMAGINE: not only sounds more beautiful, but also implies an invitation to the audience: 'Just imagine that...'
But above all because IMAGINE: articulates the adventurous, free course of the festival more clearly than before.

The genres in which the festival traditionally specializes—fantasy, horror, and science fiction—can no longer be strictly defined. In the periphery of the film industry, where filmmakers allow themselves greater artistic freedom, the festival is increasingly making its mark. With films that do not try to please a specific target audience by staying neatly within the lines of 'their genre,' but that present themselves to an audience on their own terms. Films that have in common that they pose that one question to their viewers: 'Just imagine that...' And then, each in their own way, tell their story, in whatever genre or mix of genres.

IMAGINE: will not be any other festival than the AFFF. Rather, the opposite is the case; the new name reflects better than the old one the full breadth of the programming as it has crystallized over the past few years.

Under a new name and with a campaign created in collaboration with communications agency Vandejong (including Foam, Filmmuseum), we are not only refreshing our image but also hope to prompt film lovers to revise any preconceptions they may have about the festival.
