The interest group for the film, audiovisual, and multimedia sector in Rotterdam, Het Initiatief, is organizing 7 INCH DOCS for the second time. Following the successful first edition, seasoned and new talent is once again challenged to create a short documentary. Every Rotterdam resident between the ages of 8 and 88 can win a budget for a self-conceived 3-minute documentary.

Anyone currently working in, or aspiring to work in, the audiovisual sector in Rotterdam can submit a plan by March 14, 2009. Send your idea on a maximum of one A4 page to [email protected]

At an open evening on March 18 at community theater 't Kapelletje, the makers can present their plan to a jury of renowned documentary filmmakers, namely Roy Dames, Ferri Ronteltap, and André Schreuders. The 7 winners of the pitch will receive a working budget of 500 euros. They will have a month to film and edit. The premiere will take place in May 2009.

The threshold is low. “As far as we are concerned, it is not just about students; we also want to reach high school students and the elderly,” say Arjen Weijers and Herman Slagter, both board members of Het Initiatief. The 7 Inch Docs of 2008 proved successful. The film 'Zadkine en de groeien stad' by Eef de Graaf was screened at the IFFR and at the Netherlands Film Festival. The film 'De Zoon van Koperen Ko' (No Family Business) by Maarten J. Boer was also shown at the IFFR.

7 INCH DOCS

7 INCH DOCS is named after the length of a music record that featured a hit of approximately 3 minutes. With 7 INCH DOCS, Het Initiatief aims to give talent the opportunity to gain experience. The short documentary has matured and become immensely popular. Thanks to YouTube, Myspace, the iPod, and the mobile phone, among others, the short documentary has established an independent place.
