Home Movie Day 2009

Anyone who still has (old) family films lying in the attic can bring them to the Filmmuseum in Amsterdam on Saturday, October 17. On this day, SuperSens and the Filmmuseum are presenting the Home Movie Day (HMD) for the third time, the international tribute to amateur film that is organized annually on the same day in various countries (including the USA, Argentina, Japan, and Canada). Everyone can have their family films checked, cleaned, and repaired at the Filmmuseum that day. Afterwards, they can be admired on the big screen!

Last year:
With nearly three hundred visitors, HMD 2008 was a great success and also the best-visited HMD location worldwide. The concept of an open archive day, where family films take center stage, was very positively received and appreciated.

Home Movie Day 2009:
This year we have two cinema halls at our disposal, and various additional programs have also been put together. To emphasize the international character of the HMD, a foreign guest will be present this year to present a short program of family films.

From 12:00 onwards, everyone is welcome with films on 8mm, Super8, 9.5mm, and 16mm.
The films are inspected, cleaned where necessary, and repaired by SuperSens or Filmmuseum staff. Afterwards, they are screened on the big screen in the monumental Parisien Hall of the Filmmuseum in the Vondelpark. Visitors also receive advice on the best storage conditions for their films, and a live demonstration is given of how the films can be digitally transferred to DVD or other digital media.

Representatives from various film archives are present during the Home Movie Day.
- Lamps, reels, adhesive tape, and other film materials are sold.
- There is also a repair technician for (minor) free repairs to defective projectors and viewers.

At the end of the day, the Filmmuseum and SuperSens will present an award for the most remarkable amateur film of the day. This film will be screened again immediately following the award ceremony. Later, the film will be restored, conserved, and digitized by the Filmmuseum.

There are two screening rooms available this year. Amateur films made by visitors are shown in Room 1. For the other room, a program has been drawn up featuring presentations of archives,
a film club, the Center for Home Movies from the USA, etc.
