First Squad: The Moment of Truth (Japan, 2009), the thrilling Japanese-Russian co-production by Yoshiharu Ashino, Alyoscha Klimov, and Misha Shprits, is the opening film of the 2009 Holland Animation Film Festival at City Utrecht on Wednesday evening, November 4. The film is a hybrid of documentary and fiction, based on the Russian comic book Pioneer Heroes from the 1980s. Running time: 73.

Synopsis
In the winter of 1942, the Red Army bravely resists the Nazis. Russian teenager Nadya possesses the gift of foreseeing the moment of truth: the crucial point when all powers converge. For the top-secret Sixth Division of the Russian Military Intelligence Service, that gift serves them well in the fight against an occult order within the SS.

First Squad has already screened at a number of major international film festivals, such as the Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea and the Cannes Film Festival. The HAFF is very honored to have First Squad as its opening film.

First Squad is one of the 10 features screening in Japan Imaginative Power, a special program of Japanese films featuring anime highlights, presented by Mitsue Eguchi, Artistic Director of openArt in Japan.

Red-End
Red-end and the Seemingly Symbiotic Society (Arthropod Tales - epic one) by Robin Noorda and Bethany de Forest will have its world premiere on the opening night of the HAFF on November 4. This stop-motion film leaves a very special impression.

Synopsis
Ants collect sugar cubes in an ice-cold marl cave to build a palace. This turns out to be a nursery for larvae. The little larvae pupate into bizarre, marching gluttons. The ant Red-end is different.
The press can already see the film at the HAFF press screening on October 16 at The Movies, Amsterdam, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Filmmakers Robin Noorda and Bethany de Forest will be present at the screening.

Red-end also celebrates its world premiere in 4K, the digital film format of the future, in the special program What the 4K! during the HAFF on Friday, November 6.
