De Avonden devotes considerable attention to the 22nd edition of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. Floortje Smit and Lotje IJzermans hold two hours of conversation with a number of directors whose documentaries premiered at IDFA.
First, a conversation with director Hans Pool regarding Views on Vermeer, a documentary dedicated to the work of the 17th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. Next, a conversation with actress Adelheid Roosen about her documentary 'Mam', in which she portrays her mother, who has Alzheimer's disease.
Between 8 and 9 PM: A conversation with director John Appel about his documentary The Player, in which he clarifies what drives gambling addicts. John Appel's father was an avid horse racer, which led to a life that was, to say the least, turbulent for the family. This is followed by a conversation with filmmakers Ralph de Haan and Lars Siemens about their documentary 'Spitting Ink'. In the United States, a group of young, predominantly Black artists is active, manifesting themselves as spoken word artists and forming an underground poetry movement together.
