A well-known film, but a favorite which definitely deserves to be seen again. So next Monday at the Anita let's take a look back at this classic drama directed by Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies, All or Nothing, Happy-Go-Lucky).

This film is still Mike Leigh's masterpiece and one of the best films to come out of England in the last century. It concerns the story of Johnny, a mid-twenties Mancunian drifter who heads down to London (having stolen a car) and tracks down an old girlfriend. He meets a new girl called Sophie and seduces her, then unleashes a display of venom on his old lover (Louise), and staggers off into the night when both women become too much for him to bear. His odyssey takes him to a world of the homeless, including an illiterate Scot and a lonely nightwatchman guarding empty office building.

This film is macabre, raw, searing and with dialogue as sharp as anything ever documented on celluloid. A cinematic gem, and really unlike any other film that you are ever going to see. The acting in this film is simply dynamite.
