When filmmaker Raymond van Rijn (1971, idea, script, direction, production) arrived at Fort Ruygenhoek in Groenekan in 1998 for an entrance exam for the film academy, he became captivated by a resistance story about a group that hid ration cards and provisions, among other things, in the lion's den during the occupation. This resistance group included a young German boy who, after completing his military service with the enemy, returned to the resistance. The story never left Raymond's mind.

A year later, together with Raymond van der Bas (1975, executive producer, camera) and hundreds of volunteers, including owners of historic vehicles, re-enactors, and entire museums, he started filming the extraordinary story IN THE FIRE OF THE STORM.

By 2005, they had done so much research that the makers of ZWARTBOEK asked them to pitch in on a number of sets with historical advice and to provide information about the various vehicles.
All filming took place on weekends and during holidays. Spread over nearly 200 shooting days, thousands of volunteers ultimately contributed to the production.

The locations used are primarily in the Netherlands, but scenes were also filmed in England, the Czech Republic, France, and Belgium. Complete battle scenes with original vehicles, including tanks, were filmed in Genk (B). Thanks to Harry Wiessenhaan's Special Effects team, actual explosives and firing weapons were also used.
With gifts, donations, and extensive sponsorship from, among others, costume rental, film equipment, and prop companies such as Gerritsen Theaterkostuums, AWP Rekwisieten, Workx Waddinveen, Holland Equipment, and Egripment, work on the film lasted for over ten years.

In 2007, Bridge Entertainment Group decided to support the bold project, thereby giving the creators a real chance to realize the project.

From March 4, the result, the unique ten-part war series IN THE FIRE OF THE STORM, will be available as a 4-DVD box set.

Cast
The two main roles are played by Joris van den Burg (Hans Hallerbach) and Sandra Dierx (Vera Weinberg). In addition, important roles are played by Harry Dzumhur, Caroline Nicolai, Fred van Kaam, Harrie Huys, Emile Jansen, and Sebastian Street.

Summary
Two young people, the Dutch ethnic German Hans Hallerbach and the Jewish Vera Weinberg, have been playing a dangerous game for two years to keep their forbidden love alive. Both families try to put a stop to the relationship. But when the Germans set in motion the deportation of all Dutch Jews that summer, the danger draws ever closer. When Hans is also called up to fulfill German military service and Vera's family is threatened, the game takes on an increasingly grim character.
