Jenny Arean has received a Canadian award for her role in the Dutch film *Gewoon vrienden*. The 76-year-old actress received the award for Best Supporting Actress in the competition at the Reel Out Queer Film Festival in Kingston.
Writer Henk Burger announced this on Friday. It is the sixth award the beloved TV film has received. Previously, the coming-of-age story won the audience award at the Perth International Queer Film Festival, Milan, and Key West, among others.
The film, which premiered on NPO last year, tells the story of two boys (Josha Stradowski and Majd Mardo) who fall in love with each other. Arean plays the supporting role of the shrewd Amsterdam grandmother of one of the gay lovers.
Particularly within the LGBT community, Gewoon vrienden received positive reactions because the coming-out or skin color of the characters in the story do not play a prominent role. Gewoon vrienden can still be watched in the Netherlands on NPO Start.
