Rialto brings together the best films from Latin America, Asia, and Africa in one festival.

Amsterdam has gained a film festival for world cinema: World Cinema Amsterdam.
The best independently produced films from Latin America, Asia, and Africa can now be seen at one film festival. World Cinema Amsterdam takes place from August 12 to 22 with more than 50 feature and short films at Rialto and free open-air screenings at Marie Heinekenplein.

Mexican Landscapes
Every year, World Cinema Amsterdam focuses on a country from Latin America, Asia, or Africa where interesting films are being made at that moment. This year, that country is Mexico in the program section Mexican Landscapes. The program features ten feature films and ten short films. Since 2000, there has been a revival of Mexican cinema, thanks to the work of directors such as Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores perros), Carlos Reygadas (Jápon), and Alfonso Cuarón (Y tu mamá también). Naturally, the program also includes the latest films from the youngest generation of talented Mexican filmmakers. A number of them will be present during the festival.

World Cinema Audience Award
World Cinema Amsterdam features a competition program and presents the World Cinema Audience Award, a public prize worth €7,500. Through this competition program, the festival aims to support non-Western filmmakers. The visibility of their films among the public and potential film distributors is increased. Moreover, the filmmakers receive a financial boost that is often necessary.

World Cinema Open Air
The festival concludes from Thursday, August 19 to Sunday, August 22 with four free open-air performances at the Marie Heinekenplein in the Amsterdam Pijp. A selection from the festival is screened daily around 9:30 PM.
