Film by the Sea opens its twelfth edition on Friday evening, September 10, with the Dutch premiere of the film The American by Anton Corbijn. The film is based on the bestseller A Very Private Gentleman by Martin Booth. The lead roles are played by George Clooney, Thekla Reuten, Violante Placido, Paolo Bonacelli, and Johan Leysen.

Jack (George Clooney), a specialist gunsmith and occasional user, is a master of his craft. When a job in Sweden goes worse than expected, he travels to his contact Pavel (Johan Leysen) in Rome. He decides to go into hiding for the time being in a small Italian mountain village.
There, he meets a priest (Paolo Bonacelli) and a prostitute, Clara (Violante Placido), with whom he also becomes friends. He is also asked to make a weapon for a new client, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten). Influenced by his new friendships, Jack decides that this will be his last assignment.
But you don't get out of this environment that easily.

Anton Corbijn (Strijen, 1955) gives the word multidisciplinary new meaning. He is primarily known as a photographer, but his interests and field of work extend beyond that. He designs record covers, logos (such as the logo of The Hague), posters (including the poster for Film by the Sea 2001), directed music videos (for U2, Johnny Cash, Coldplay, and Nirvana, among others), and designs stages, such as those for Depeche Mode's world tour and for Herbert Groenemeyer since 1993. Groenemeyer also composed the score for The American. In 2007, Anton Corbijn made his feature film directorial debut with Control. The film won 23 awards, including five BIFAs, and was nominated for a BAFTA. The American is Corbijn's second feature film.

The twelfth edition of the International Film Festival Film by the Sea takes place this year at CineCity Vlissingen from Friday, September 10 to Sunday, September 19. The audience grew from 10,000 visitors in 1999 to nearly 45,000 in 2009, making Film by the Sea the largest cultural event in Zeeland. Film by the Sea is known for its unique program, relaxed atmosphere, and special location by the sea. The films in the competition are book adaptations.
