Hisko Hulsing presents his animated film Danse macabre at the Netherlands Film Festival 2026. The film is based on the second movement of Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony. Like Fantasia, the film consists exclusively of visuals and music, without dialogue or sound effects. Every shot is based on an oil painting by Hulsing himself. Animators in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Hungary worked on the production. The film is a warning against the rise of fascism and translates the music into a timeless image of terror and war. Hulsing already foresaw this threat following the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014.
