The Netherlands scores strongly internationally in XR, while Dutch cinema remains relatively unknown. This year, three Dutch works are in competition at Venice Immersive: Celine Daemen's Nothing to See Here, Tibor de Jong's Honeyboys, and Nienke Huitenga Broeren's Amsterdam 1652. Steye Hallema was invited with La laguna parla. Four makers sought an explanation. They point to Dutch theatre traditions, in which makers have long experimented with audience presence. The egalitarian, non-hierarchical work culture allows for rapid course corrections. Institutional openness to experimentation also plays a role. Tibor de Jong cites available subsidy funds as a decisive factor, combined with Dutch frugality that ensures small budgets are utilized to the maximum.
