Mari Sanders made his feature film directorial debut with Stand Up, which had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and will be screened at the Netherlands Film Festival this coming week. The film follows Vera, who ends up in a wheelchair after an accident. Sanders, a wheelchair user himself, deliberately chose actors with disabilities and wrote the lead roles specifically for Lucia Zemene and Daan Buringa. He received eighty applications via social media and disability organizations after official casting channels yielded no results. Sanders advocates for accessibility officers on sets, following the British example, and hopes that Stand Up provides a blueprint for more inclusive production conditions.
