Downtown is the opening film of the 2026 Netherlands Film Festival and a production of Kaap Holland Film and WW Entertainment. The drama, written by Frank Houtappels and directed by Michiel van Erp, is set between the 1980s and the coronavirus era. The idea originated during the lockdown, when Houtappels saw parallels between the AIDS epidemic and the coronavirus. At its center is a friendship between three men, each representing a different side of Houtappels himself. The script combines autobiographical elements with fiction. Downtown already premiered earlier this year at the LGBTQ+ festival Frameline in San Francisco.
