ALICE IN DEN STADTEN (Alice in the Cities) 1974
Directed by Wim Wenders
110 minutes
In German with English subtitles
Largely unknown and really difficult to ever see because it is extremely rare ever shown outside Germany, this film shines like a rough diamond. Therefore dont expect any polished surfaces and the kind of cheap sentimentality that leaks out and overtakes most of Wenders later films. This is Wenders when he is young, and when he was best. This road film is stripped down, grainy, honest and extremely low-budget, and is, quite honestly, a breath of fresh air...especially in these days of extravagant budgets and slick productions.
What's the story? The film is the first in Wender\'s road films that he made his name on. The story is life itself- the kinds of things that really happen when you are on an adventure. A photo-journalist suddenly finds himself stuck with a little girl and he has no idea what happened to the mother. Together they go traveling through the East coast of America, and then back to Europe. If I remember right they even pass through Amsterdam!
This is cinema that is fresh, connected to life itself and not filtered through the so-called brains of a thousand businessmen before it hits the screen! For my vote this is the best film Wenders ever made.....
+ A wonderful 25 minute interview with Wim Wenders about the making of the film.
