This summer, Belgian artist Kurt d' Haeseleer was artist-in-residence at Impakt Works. There, he created his latest work, 'Archaic Smile'. The video is an exploration into the world of archaeological theme parks and reenactments of historical battles. Why do people allow themselves to be transported back to the past, whether as a hobby or a family outing? Do fear and aversion to contemporary modernity play a role? Is there a case of 'Disneyfication' of the past when history is transformed into controlled moments in which epidemics like the plague, or war and battles, are relived as moments of fun and entertainment?
The premiere of 'Archaic Smile' will be part of a sensory anti-reading in which Kurt d' Haeseleer offers an insight into his oeuvre through a video montage. Fragments from the work of Antonioni, Todd Haynes, Jürgen Reble, and Derek Jarman, among others, are woven between his own work and his new video 'Archaic Smile' and commented upon with audio excerpts and Godardian placards.
Following the presentation, Kurt d' Haeseleer will be interviewed by Bart Rutten (Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam) and will give a live visual performance together with TUK (Guillaume Graux).

Impakt Works: MASS by Julio Soto & Scott Petill
On December 11, we will present the result of the residency that Soto and Petill are undertaking at Impakt this autumn. MASS is an installation that utilizes Artificial Intelligence and delves deeper into all possible forms of group behavior and group dynamics through the interaction between real people and a community of computer-generated AI avatars. The presentation is being held in collaboration with Z25 (Utrecht).
