FAT GIRL (A MA SOEUR!) 2001
Directed by Catherine Breillat
86 minutes
In French with English subtitles
French film director Catherine Breillat (ROMANCE X) is always best when she is dealing with sexual adolescence, which is also the subject of this film. Fat Girl is a typically shocking, utterly discomfiting film from Breillat, whose excursions into female psychology and sexuality are anything but clinical or pornographic (even though they are explicit).
Two adolescent sisters journey to the seaside on vacation with their parents; the younger sister is overweight and brooding, the older girl is a beauty who attracts the attention of a handsome boy. Much of the film is built around two paintaking seduction scenes, characteristically shot by Breillat with both comic and horrific overtones and long, uncomfortable takes. Both girls have different wishes about how they want to lose their virginity, and each one gets what they asked for in a perverted sort of way. The ending of the film descends into hell.
The film was brutally censored in England (to the point that the entire meaning of the film was changed), but we of course will be screening the uncut version.
