Cineblend is a monthly evening with an informal atmosphere featuring dinner, film, and debate. The focus is on (visual) anthropology and documentary cinema, linked to current social themes. This evening, the focus is on Metropolis TV.

In January 2009, the VPRO television program Metropolis celebrates its first anniversary. Metropolis marks this on Friday, January 9, with a compilation of the best contributions from 2008 on Nederland 3. Cineblend does the same on January 13 with a special evening dedicated to this unique program.

Metropolis TV is a multimedia project in which young filmmakers from around the world report on life in their own cities and cultures. Currently, more than sixty correspondents are involved in the program, spread across five continents. Every week, a part of the global network sets out to explore a specific theme, creating a comparative perspective between people and cultures. The correspondents can be followed daily online and weekly on TV.

This evening, we look back on the first season with a Metropolis team led by editor-in-chief Stan van Engelen. We delve deeper into the working methods and objectives of the program. According to Van Engelen, we visit places where a Dutch viewer or Western journalist would not normally go. What are the pros and cons of working with local filmmakers? Doesn't a local filmmaker miss out on too much, precisely because of their familiarity with their own environment? How do you forge different cultural film styles into a coherent program to make it appealing to a Dutch audience? And what exactly does that comparative perspective entail?

Cineblend will be held at the Soeterijn Café, Tropentheater (Linnaeusstraat 2, Amsterdam), with doors opening at 5:00 PM. Dinner is served from 6:00 PM (€17.50 including a drink; reservations required at 020 – 5688 500). The main program begins at 7:30 PM (free admission). The evening concludes with drinks from 9:30 PM.
