Joost Rekveld (1970) has been creating abstract films and light installations since 1991, originally starting from the idea of visual music for the eye. His films are often inspired by now rarely trodden side paths in the history of science and technology. Much of his work to date is based on various forms of 'scanning' or on concepts related to the early history of optics and perspective. His interest in the spatial aspects of light led to more theatrical and architectural forms of work. Lately, he has become increasingly involved in activities reminiscent of cybernetics, artificial life, and robotic architecture. Joost Rekveld has frequently collaborated on theater projects, often with dance group Emio Greco | PC and music theater ensemble De Veenfabriek. As a curator, he curated programs for, among others, Sonic Acts (Sonic Light) and the Filmmuseum (4D in the Filmmuseum). He also teaches and is Head of the Interfaculty ArtScience of the Royal Conservatory and the Royal Academy in The Hague.
At this Event, Joost Rekveld will screen '#37', his latest film. '#37' is nominated for the 2009 Tiger Award for Best Short Film. Joost Rekveld will be interviewed by Maria Verstappen and will discuss his methods and ideas, using his own films as well as 'Kosmos' by Thorsten Fleisch and 'Lapis' by James Whitney.
