The festival builds upon the previously proven and well-received formula: a clear, rigorously selected program of the best recent national and international documentary films. In the national and international competition, the DOCVILLE Jury awards a SCAM and a CANVAS Jury Prize for Best Documentary, respectively. In addition to the competitive section, DOCVILLE also presents a number of specials and retrospectives. Also a regular feature are the avant-premières presented in collaboration with Belgian distributors.

Documentary filmmakers who wish to submit their work(s) to the programming team can do so now. The conditions for participation in the national competition are as follows:
The film must be completed between April 15, 2008 and March 25, 2009.
The national competition is open to Belgian productions.
Allowed projection formats: 35mm, 16mm, Beta SP, Beta DIGI, HDV, HD CAM, DV, Mini-DV, DV-Cam.
