The monthly Rialto Podium is dedicated to special screenings. Special, because a distinguished guest always takes the stage: the film's director, a film expert, or someone from the world of art or politics. On Saturday, February 21, journalist Hans Beerekamp will be the guest. He will present one of his favorite films to the audience and explain his choice.
Hans Beerekamp's Choice - Geschichte der Nacht | February 21, 4:00 PM
Hans Beerekamp was associated with NRC Handelsblad as a film editor for more than a quarter of a century and, during that period, grew into one of the country's most influential film critics. Since 2003, he has been reviewing the Dutch television landscape, also for NRC Handelsblad. He also appears regularly on television himself – for example, as a contestant on Talpa's quiz show De Slimste and, more recently, as a guest on De Wereld Draait Door. At the invitation of Rialto, he presents one of his favorite films: the 1979 Swiss novel *Geschichte der Nacht* by Clemens Klopfenstein. Beerekamp will be present at the screening and will provide a personal explanation of his choice.
History of the Night
Clemens Klopfenstein | Switzerland | 1979 | 63' | Spoken in German
Inspired by James Joyce's novel Ulysses, Swiss filmmaker Clemens Klopfenstein embarked on a film project in which he attempted to capture the nocturnal atmosphere over a series of 150 nights in dozens of European cities. Locations, movement, light, and sound merge into a single fictional night. The word 'Geschichte' in the title is intentionally misleading, as the filmmaker makes no attempt to tell a story. His film is a wordless collage of mostly deserted streets and squares, a silent film poem as an ode to everything that lives and moves at night: ghosts, shadows, beams of light, and sometimes a few bewildered people.

Surreal journey through the Dutch landscape with visits to existing clichés. The country and the film are bound together by artificiality. What is actually 'real' in this culture?
