14.30-15.30 Vertoning Private File – Saad Hendawy
15.30-16.30 Discussie

Films of both directors are screened at the Arab film festival Cinéma Arabe (8 - 15 April, Rialto Amsterdam).
Globalisation has its effects on the Muslim World, just as it has on the Western world. Disappearing traditions lead to a need for a confirmation of the individual identity. How does this affect Egyptians? Can tradition and progress merge? What determines identity: culture or religion? Nadia Kamel filmed her own family for Salata Baladi which depicts family history in the Egyptian diaspora. Saad Hendawy’s documentary Private File focuses on the taboo of premarital sex and the self-censorship this leads to.
Moderator of the debate is Chris Keulemans.
