The non-profit organization Filmmagie received a negative preliminary recommendation from the assessment committee for its 2010-2012 subsidy application. Minister of Culture Anciaux will make the final decision, basing it on that recommendation and on the detailed reply from the non-profit organization.
Without those subsidies, the non-profit organization cannot continue to exist. This means not only that the very extensive film archive will disappear, but also that the two film magazines Filmmagie and Cinemagie, the only magazines in Belgium entirely dedicated to film, can no longer be produced.
That would, of course, be a serious loss. After all, Cinemagie is the only (film) magazine that offers a forum to students and recent graduates by publishing interesting papers and theses as articles. In addition, Cinemagie aims to contribute to the dissemination of visual literacy by offering teaching materials in every issue so that film can be used in a meaningful way in schools, or by providing tips for processing a film in the classroom. Finally, Cinemagie offers background articles on film in all its aspects.
The magazine Filmmagie is published ten times a year and reviews films released in cinemas and on DVDs, and publishes specials with interviews about important films. It also features articles on current issues, such as the much-discussed arthouse series. Filmmagie focuses not only on the better American films, but also on European and world cinema. Filmmagie is present at all major European film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, and Venice.
The DOCIP archive has existed since the 1930s. It contains more than 60,000 film files with clippings, footage, and references to articles in the fifty or so domestic and foreign magazines cataloged at Filmmagie. Since the 1990s, storage has been primarily digital. It would be a disaster if that treasure trove of material and information were lost.
If you also believe that the Filmmagie non-profit organization should continue, you would help us enormously by signing this petition by copying this text and sending it back to us with your name and stating your position at the bottom of this text.
Thank you very much!
